STATEMENT

LEGO offers the possibility for both logic and spontaneity. These two qualities reflect ideals for living in any community, from local neighborhoods to major cities. All of Scenic Architecture's 10 staff members created individual models, displaying their own concerns and interests while also collaborating together following three basic guidelines to promote communal awareness and collaboration: use LEGO to think and create; no preparatory plans; each model is restricted to specific dimensions that combine into a 3x4 grid. The resulting models resist prescribed interpretation. We hope this openness can increase the audience's understanding and experience of creativity and that children can explore the relations between individuality and community on a self-initiated level, developing their comprehension of urbanity.

ABOUT SCENIC ARCHITECTURE

Zhu Xiaofeng is the principal architect of Scenic Architecture, established in Shanghai in 2004 with the belief that the spirit of architecture exists in how people perceive the basic elements of nature and living. Rather than form or style, Scenic Architecture focuses on the emotion and logic of space, light and matter in its design concepts. Zhu earned his M.Arch from Shenzhen University School of Architecture in 1994 and an M.Arch from Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 1999. Prior to founding Scenic, Zhu was Associate Principal of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates in New York.
